What is SIP Trunking?A Session Initiation Protocol or SIP Trunk is a service offered by an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) like Data Network Solutions that allows businesses that have a PBX installed to use Voice-over-IP (VoIP) to also connect outside the enterprise network by using the same connection as the Internet connection. In effect, the Internet replaces the conventional telephone trunk, allowing an enterprise to communicate with fixed and mobile telephone subscribers worldwide. There are three components necessary to successfully deploy SIP Trunks: a PBX
with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise edge device understanding SIP and
an Internet telephony or SIP Trunking provider like Data Network Solutions. IP PBX: An IP-based PBX communicates with all endpoints over an IP network. It also switches calls between VoIP users on local lines while allowing all users to share a number of external phone lines. The typical IP PBX Phone System can additionally switch calls between a VoIP user and a traditional-telephone user, or between two traditional-telephone users in the same way that a conventional PBX does. But for SIP Trunking it may just as well be a traditional digital or analog PBX. The sole requirement is only that an interface for SIP trunking connectivity is available. ITSP (Internet Telephone Service Provider): The role of an ITSP like Data Network Solutions is to ensure connectivity to the PSTN from an IP network for mobile and fixed communication devices. We also transport IP communications across a private IP network or public Internet. Border Element: The border element facilitates connectivity between an enterprise IP network, the PSTN and an external IP-carrier network. The border element may be an SIP-capable firewall or a SIP-enabling edge device connected to the firewall, or it can be a switch to transfer calls into and out of the PSTN. Border elements are usually managed by the service provider. The PBX on the LAN connects to the Data Network Solutions via the enterprise border element. The enterprise edge component can either be a firewall with complete support for SIP or an edge device connected to the firewall, handling the traversal of the SIP traffic. On the Internet, Data Network Solutions provides connectivity to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) for communication with mobile and fixed phones. DNS provides SIP trunks (dial tone) over any broadband ISP connecting to existing Digital or Analog or IP PBX
Why Use SIP Trunks? For enterprises wanting to make full use of their installed IP-PBX Phone System and not only communicate over IP within the enterprise, but also outside the enterprise a SIP trunk provided by Data Network Solutions to connect to the traditional PSTN network is the solution. Unlike in traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires were once delivered from the service provider to a business, a SIP trunk allows a company to replace these traditional fixed PSTN lines with PSTN connectivity via a SIP trunking service provider on the Internet. One of the most significant advantages of SIP Trunking it allows for convergence of voice and data onto a common IP connection, eliminating the need for separate physical media for each mode. The result is reduced overall cost and greater reliability for multimedia services. SIP trunks can also offer significant cost-savings for enterprises by eliminating the need for local PSTN gateways, costly ISDN BRIs (Basic Rate Interfaces) or PRIs (Primary Rate Interfaces). SIP Trunking capability also reduces costs of telecommunications, simplifies IP-PBX technology, and enables new forms of business communications across traditional boundaries. It is a unique product that delivers great benefits to Medium and Small Businesses as well as School Districts and Municipalities. Check out the many SIP Trunking Benefits you enterprise can take advantage of! SIP Trunking Benefits· SIP Trunking eliminates the need to invest in expensive TDM-gateway equipment infrastructure or desktop equipment · Investing in SIP Trunks nullifies the need to purchase equipment, such as managed-media gateway devices, to interface between IP voice and the PSTN · SIP Trunking will also reduce to eliminate the many costs associated with the ongoing support and maintenance of hardware media gateways. · SIP Trunking eliminates the need for PRI (primary rate interface)/ BRI (basic rate interface) connections, which in turn will lower telephony costs. · With SIP Trunks, companies have points of presence in multiple U.S. cities so they can establish local numbers rather than rely on a 1-800 number. · Since only one connection for data and voice is needed with SIP Trunks. Companies reduce the recurring costs of separate PSTN and data circuits (some dedicated to voice and some to data). · SIP Trunking eliminates the over-subscription of voice channels based on business requirements. · SIP Trunks support multiple methods of communicating including instant messaging and video which allows for greater levels of user presence. · SIP Trunking utilizes DID’s (Direct Inward Dials) that allows each employee to have their own phone line. This will increase the flexibility and implementation of call control and dial plans. · SIP Trunking improves the call quality of voice based IP communications because each SIP Trunk is a dedicated “channel.” · SIP Trunks reduces toll charges from SIP origination/termination services to the PSTN for local access and external long-distance calls. · SIP Trunking allows for the selection of a single SIP Trunk which greatly increases the flexibility and ease of adding, subtracting, or changing a line. · SIP Trunks enable faster and more efficient disaster recovery with an IP network's distributed architecture, inherently more error tolerant than fixed line, circuit-switched counterparts. . · Adopting SIP Trunks also allows companies access to the benefits of a hosted VoIP service, without the disposal of existing investments in a traditional phone system More on SIP TrunksAlthough SIP trunking providers offer many options at varying costs, it is not uncommon for companies to realize instant cost savings from a relatively modest investment in SIP-based technology. Certainly, SIP requires purchasing services and products including an IP PBX, IP Phones, soft clients and SIP-friendly firewalls, to name a few out-of-pocket expenses. But if deployed properly, SIP trunking can produce a healthy return on investments in less than six months. SIP Trunking facilitates the changes you need to make your business more profitable and competitive and it allows you to make your move right now, and establish a platform that will serve your business far into the future. It does all of this by leveraging your existing data connection to connect your PBX to our proprietary network, enabling more economical telecommunication services and facilitating a "cap-and-grow" strategy while transitioning to VoIP, as well as shortening and smoothing your move to a fully-hosted VoIP solution For more information about how SIP Trunks can benefit your enterprise please call or e-mail us now, and let one of our experienced network engineers construct a unique SIP Trunk Solution for your business!
