What is SIP Trunking?

A Session Initiation Protocol or SIP Trunk is a service offered by an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider) like Data Network Solutions that allows businesses that have a PBX installed to use Voice-over-IP (VoIP) to also connect outside the enterprise network by using the same connection as the Internet connection. In effect, the Internet replaces the conventional telephone trunk, allowing an enterprise to communicate with fixed and mobile telephone subscribers worldwide.

There are three components necessary to successfully deploy SIP Trunks: a PBX with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise edge device understanding SIP and an Internet telephony or SIP Trunking provider like Data Network Solutions.
 

IP PBX: An IP-based PBX communicates with all endpoints over an IP network. It also switches calls between VoIP users on local lines while allowing all users to share a number of external phone lines. Border elements are usually managed by the service provider.

The PBX on the LAN connects to the Data Network Solutions via the enterprise border element. The enterprise edge component can either be a firewall with complete support for SIP or an edge device connected to the firewall, handling the traversal of the SIP traffic.
